- 1 P90X Workout Schedule & Calendar
The P90X workout is one of the most intense home fitness programs ever created, and it comes with an equally powerful schedule.
For those who have what it takes to stick with this calendar for the full 90 days, they can expect to get shredded, lean, and probably in the best shape of their lives.
P90X comes with several different options for getting started: Classic, Doubles, or Lean.
This is great because you can decide where you want to start with the program, and then when your 90 days are up, if you’re loving the way you feel, you can try another version to keep things going.
If you’re brand new to P90X you will most likely want to start with the Lean or Classic version, but with this in mind, let’s take look at each one, just so you have an idea of what to expect when getting started:
Classic: With this version of P90X you will be doing 3 resistance training workouts and 3 workouts that are more cardio intensive every week.
The P90X brand of resistance training includes a lot of body weight exercises, like push-ups and squats, but you will also need some resistance bands or dumbbells and a pull-up bar.
Lean: If your goal is to lose the most weight, or get that nice looking lean muscle, then this may be the program you want to start with.
Here you will be doing 2 resistance workouts per week, and 4 cardio or yoga workouts.
Doubles: This is the most intense version of the P90X program, and is typically reserved for those who have completed one full cycle of X, or those who are in great shape already.
With the Doubles version, you will be doing the full Classic version of P90X, along with a cardio or yoga workout.
Essentially, you’ll be working out twice per day, 6 days per week – a full-blown shred fest!
In years past, if you wanted to try P90x, your only option was to order the full catalog of DVDs.

Final Thoughts
As you can see, there is a lot of work involved with this schedule, and it certainly isn’t for the faint of heart.
P90X produces amazing results for the true Xers, but it definitely isn’t for everyone. It’s going to take plenty of hard work, sweat, and dedication.

P90X is a home exercise system developed by trainer Tony Horton. It comes as a set of 12 DVDs, each devoted to a different type of exercise. As an alternative, you can also stream these videos on demand. The idea is that the most effective way to work out is to do a variety of different kinds of activities regularly. This way you're less likely to hit a plateau as your body becomes stronger and more accustomed to a particular workout. You're also less likely to get bored.
Among the workouts in the P90X system is a yoga practice that's gotten a reputation for being one of the hardest of the dozen. Whether you're an experienced yogi or you've never rolled out a mat before in your life, here are some things you should know before you give P90X yoga a whirl.
It's a Power Thing
If you're familiar with power yoga, much of the practice Horton has created will seem familiar. The 90-minute class gets underway with a pep talk from Horton. From here, he guides the viewer and four on-screen students through a series of sun salutations. These are a sequence of poses (called asanas) that typically are done one after the other without stopping in what's known as flow (vinyasa) yoga. Horton makes his sun salutations especially challenging by adding an extra chaturanga to each repetition of the vinyasa. A chaturanga is something like a push-up position in which the elbows are bent 90 degrees and the body is briefly suspended above the mat.
After the sun salutations, Horton leads the class through the same types of asanas offered in most typical yoga classes. For the most part, he focuses on the more challenging and advanced versions of poses. For example, the standing sequence includes revolved triangle, twisting chair, and bound side angle asanas, and the balancing poses include crow—none of which are likely to be part of a beginners' class.

Each of the four students in the videos is at a different level of strength and flexibility, which is great because it gives Horton a chance to encourage using props and modifications to make sure alignment in each asana is safe and correct. It's a good message for yogis who hesitate to do either because they feel it means they aren't really doing yoga 'right' or they're being wimpy for needing the aid of a block or strap.

At the same time, Horton encourages students to push themselves—something most yoga teachers don't do (and for good reason). This is how injuries happen. More attention should be paid to body alignment in some of the poses. For instance, in shoulder stand, which is an important pose to get right since it places the neck in a vulnerable position, he allows unsafe arm positioning to go uncorrected.

Be Careful If You're a Beginner
Even though he spends a lot of time moving among the students on the screen, Horton allows some potentially dangerous alignment issues to go unnoticed.
Full Workout Plan
Horton ends the practice with savasana, or corpse pose, which is how most yoga classes wind down, but it lasts for only a minute, when at least five to 10 are ideal to allow the mind and body to calm down.
Who May Benefit From P90X Yoga
For an experienced yoga student who has a command of alignment and who knows about and is able to accept his physical limitations in order to stay safe, P90X yoga is fine. But it's probably not a smart start for a beginning yogi. Plus, if all you're interested in is yoga, it probably isn't the most financially sound place to begin. You have to buy the entire P90X set of DVDs to get the yoga one or sign up for their online subscription.
