My Take:
A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine–distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man–but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.
As a youngster I was a big Spider-man fan. This was actually born first out of watching the cartoon series on TV then going on to read the comics. Spidey was and is easy to like and the character has a transcendent appeal that has endured. When the first film series come out I was initially skeptical about how effectively he could be brought to the big screen. Regardless about what some may think I thought that Tobey Maguire handled it well. What eventually made the series less appealing were the storylines, especially those revolving around Peter’s relationship with Mary Jane, and the plot points associated with villains.
Then there was the 2012 reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield. I rather enjoyed the handling of those two films, finding the edginess of the storyline and incorporation of the villains and Peter’s personal life to be compelling. When I learned that there was going to be another iteration I wasn’t as enthusiastic, but my son, who is a big fan of the character and films assured me that this new direction would be the best yet. After seeing the character’s appearance in Captain America: Civil War I thought he could very well be right.
When Spider-Man: Homecoming was released in theaters earlier this year I went to see it with my wife and my son (he had already seen it). We of course, enjoyed it. The differing narrative spin regarding young Peter opens the door for further exploration even if it does tweak the Spider-man mythos a bit. Drawing Peter as less self-confident hero struggling to prove himself is a nice touch as is the introduction of his relationship with Iron Man/The Avengers and how it pertains to the storyline. The decision to incorporate the re-design of the Spidey suit is spot on. The remaining production elements are top notch and support the action sequences which prove entertaining.
The script is well crafted and the pacing is excellent. At well over two hours it moves along nicely. In addition to Peter, the integration of the secondary characters as well as the subplot/plot involving The Vulture is well done. The cast selection is complimentary all around and effectively enhances the film’s allure. The conclusion sets the stage for the continuing storyline regarding the character as well as the upcoming events in the Marvel film universe.
As far as franchise reboots go I think that Spider-Man: Homecoming is a winner. I look forward to what lies in store in the next installment.

Spider-Men: Homecoming 3D comes to Blu-ray Disc from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment featuring 1080p MVC encoded video and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master audio sound that has an average bitrate of 3.5 Mbps.
This film wasn’t shot natively in 3D and was converted in post-production. 3D conversions have shown discernible improvement since the format’s inception but can still be hit or miss. I have found that the subject matter can sometimes have an effect on what I am willing to accept from 3D in terms of how zealous its implementation is. A film like Spider-Man: Homecoming seems like a good choice for a more “active” 3D presentation. That isn’t to say that natural depth and proportionate dimension should take a back seat. I found this to be a decent 2D to 3D conversion that while not overtly active or always proportionately natural kept me engaged without regular distraction. Detail is well preserved as the image retains its high level of clarity as objects within the frame are delineated and sharp.
Depth is appreciable as evidenced by a predominantly natural sense of dimension as objects or people are layered in the foreground/background. Occasionally near field placement of people standing or moving through the frame had a bit of the cardboard cutout effect but it wasn’t a big deal. There are sequences that provide reach out and touch dimension as well as a bit of screen popping wizardry. This primarily revolves around the action based sequences and features flying objects, exploding debris, or protruding effects. Comparing contrast, color, skin tone reproduction and detail reproduction to the 2D presentation I think that they appear identical. I didn’t observe any instances of crosstalk/ghosting. Overall Spider-Man: Homecoming makes for a solid and complimentary 3D experience that I preferred to the 2D version.
Action films like this live or die by their soundtracks and this DTS-HD Master Audio mix gets it right. This is an engaging surround sound mix that features a host of well-placed sound effects that at times prove very involving. I appreciated the attention to detail that went into creating the surround mix as it effectively replicates the various character specific sounds and environments featured in the film. Near field sounds are accurately placed within the sound field which gives them multi-dimensional perspective that places you right in the middle of the action. During the large set pieces, such as the rescue at the Washington Monument or the final battle with The Vulture, the room is illuminated with a blend of sounds that are both directional and ambient in nature. Low frequencies are rich, and room energizing as they accentuate the audio’s excellent dynamic range with palpable richness and room trembling impact. Dialog intelligibility is never a problem even during the film’s active moments. This is a great surround sound presentation that makes for an entertaining home theater experience. Be sure to give the volume knob an extra turn.

Spider-Men: Homecoming comes to Blu-ray Disc from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 27 Mbps.
Spider-Man: Homecoming looks great on Blu-ray and features excellent high definition video quality that exhibits high level detail, defining sharpness and exquisite definition that brings out lifelike textures captured by the camera’s lens. Dimensional perspective has a near infinite appeal that can be visually stimulating. Close ups are noticeably refined and revealing of the subtlest details within facial features and objects within the frame. Mid-level camera pans are equally enriching and offer excellent depth and dimension. Colors are appreciably delineated with natural rendering and punchy primaries that stand out among the remaining spectrum of secondary hues. Fleshtones are rendered with vivid tonality and discerning complexional description. Contrast is boldly applied without overstatement as it enlivens colors and empowers whites without washing away detail. Blacks are rich, gradationally strong and dynamic which makes them pop nicely during sequences containing a mix of light and dark elements. Detail in uneven light and darkened environments reveal visible shapes and structure in backgrounds. This is a pristine and faithful encoding that looks terrific on my big screen.
